The Parish of St. Thomas More covers the area of Parson Cross, Grenoside, Foxhill, Birley Carr, parts of Southey and parts of Ecclesfield. It was founded from St. Patrick's, Sheffield Lane Top, in 1945. In the May of that year the original presbytery was bought but due to post war restrictions the parish had to wait five years to build a church. In those five years the congregation worshipped at Meynell Road Council School and in a room above the presbytery garage. In June 1950, the church, on the corner of Halifax Road and Cowper Avenue, was solemnly blessed.
In 1952 land on Wordsworth Avenue was purchased but it was not until 1969 that the new church and community centre was built. It was and is an embodiment of Vatican II teaching, the Church in the modern world, - the complex being one building with the Church at its centre or heart with other rooms around it for parish and wider community use. This represented the mission of the church to its members and the wider community. In 1994 the original presbytery was sold and a new one built next to the church on Wordsworth Avenue. In 2001 the original church closed. In recent years the parish has entered into lease arrangements with The Parson Cross Community Development Forum (http://www.pxforum.org/) and Dickory Dock Nursery (http://www.dickorydock.org/) who use the community parts of the building. This has brought to fruition what was intended when the church and community centre was built - a centre for the whole community with the church at its heart.
Fr. Andrew Browne has been the parish priest of St. Thomas More since March 2019.
